By Genalyn Kabiling  Airport authorities are prepared to cooperate with the Bureau of Immigration (BI) in its planned investigation into the alleged bribery scheme to facilitate escort service for Chinese workers. MIAA GM Ed Monreal (CAMILLE ANTE / FILE PHOTO / MANILA BULLETIN) Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) general manager Eddie Monreal expressed sympathy with the immigration bureau over its latest concern and promised assistance such as access to security video. "Siguro kasing bigat ng nararamdaman ng ahensya ng immigration. Kahit hindi kami directly involved, siyempre we sympathize with the bureau kung ganoon ang label so sana naman po maayos ito (It's as heavy as the immigration bureau feels. Although we are not directly involved, we sympathize with the bureau if that's the label so we hope this will be resolved)," Monreal said during a Palace press briefing when asked about his sentiment on the bribery scandal affecting the immigration bureau. Asked if they are ready to help the immigration bureau with the probe and eventual case build-up, Monreal later told reporters: "Kung mayroon silang pangangailangan at covered na CCTV... kapag may valid na rason, kapag humingi ang ahensiya, walang problema doon (If they need anything that is covered by the CCTV... if there's a valid reason, if an agency asks for help, there is no problem)." Monreal however admitted that not all areas in the airport are covered by the closed circuit television. He said the projects seeking to upgrade the security videos are still ongoing. He noted that the current security video system could store one week of footage. "It's about one week of storage. 'Yung project na install ngayon mas mahaba. Hindi pa na-turnover sa amin ang project. It's ongoing (The installation project now will have longer capacity. There is no turnover yet. It's ongoing)," he said in an interview with reporters. Five immigration officials have reportedly been relieved pending an investigation into the alleged bribery scheme involving bureau personnel and Chinese workers in the Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGOs). Under the "pastillas" scheme exposed in a recent Senate inquiry, Chinese workers allegedly pay P10,000 to immigration personnel for easy entry into the country. Monreal insisted that Manila airport has no participation in such bribery scheme allegedly involving some immigration personnel at the Manila airport, saying they are merely owner of the house. He maintained that passengers pass through the proper airport procedures. But he said he has no details about the reported “pastillas” scheme other than what is reported in the media. "Wala kami participation. Kami lang may-ari ng bahay (We have no participation. We are just the owner of the house),” he said.
