By Anthony Giron CAMP GEN. PANTALEON GARCIA, IMUS CITY, Cavite – The Cavite Police Provincial Office (PPO) has included "sacla sa patay" or the Spanish card games in wakes in its war against illegal gambling. The Cavite PPO declared the all-out offensive against all prohibited games last week. The action was undertaken in line with the February 8 order of Brigadier General Vicente D. Danao Jr., Police Regional Office IV-A director, to rid the Calabarzon (Cavite-Laguna-Batangas-Rizal-Quezon) area of illegal gambling, aside from the prohibited drugs and other criminal activities that have been implemented in the turf. Colonel Marlon Roque Santos, Cavite provincial police director (PD), ordered the all-out drive against the illegal forms of gambling to all the police chiefs of the seven cities and 16 municipalities in his jurisdiction. The total war against illegal gambling was confirmed by Lieutenant Colonel Vicente O. Amante, Imus chief of police, as he ordered the stern implementation of the anti-vice drive in his own turf. Imus is Cavite's capital and serves as base of the PPO or Camp Gen. Pantaleon Garcia. Amante said that the war includes "sacla" and all other gambling games in wakes or dead vigil. "Total war po tayo, pati sugal sa may patay, bawal," Amante told this reporter. (We are in total war, even gambling in wakes are prohibited.) The continued practice of holding “sacla”during wakes or vigils for the dead has been considered a ticklish issue in Cavite. “Sacla sa patay” and other gambling games conducted at wakes were reportedly being allowed to operate in the province for “humanitarian reasons” because proceeds from the illegal activity are used to help in paying for the burial of the dead. The PRO-IV-A issued the the order against illegal gambling in Calabarzon two Saturdays ago. Cavite was observed to be the second area to have banned "sacla" and other gambling games in wakes after the police actions against illegal gambling in Metro Manila as ordered by Brig, Gen. Debold Sinas, National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) director. "Sacla" and other forms of gambling in wakes have stopped in the metropolis with Sinas' order. It was the first time in years, if not decades, that "sacla sa patay" had been checked and halted in a region, it was observed. Cavite PPO-Public Information Officer Major Dennis A. Villnueva reported that over a hundred individuals involved in illegal gambling have already been arrested by local police in the eight districts of the province. Those arrested were brought to police stations, detained and charged for Violation of Presidential Decree 1602 (illegal gambling), Villanueva said. Among those that have been clamped down in Cavite are "tupada" (illegal cockpit), "monte" (also a Spanish card game), "video-karera" (horse race on video), "tong-its" (card game), cara y cruz (coin game), "mahjong" (character tile game), gambling games at "peryahan" or mini-carnival and other games that involved bet money. The public is now keenly watching the "war" against illegal gambling launched by the Cavite police.
