Retired SC justice Arturo Buena dies at 87

Retired Supreme Court (SC) Associate Justice Arturo B. Buena passed away on Thursday (Feb. 13). He was 87.

He was appointed to the Court of Appeals in 1986 and promoted to SC associate justice in 1999. He retired in 2002.

The SC’s public information office said that during Buena’s stay in the SC, he wrote more than 200 significant decisions, including the landmark ruling of the court en banc on the Visiting Forces Agreement (VFA) -- G.R. Nos. 138570, 138572, 138587, 138680, and 138698, promulgated on Oct. 10, 2000.

He is survived by his second wife, Virgith Balan-Buena, and children Susan, Arturo Jr., Benjamin, and Carlo, and grandchildren.

His remains lie in state at the Arlington Chapels on Araneta Avenue in Quezon City. The schedule of interment will be announced later.
