Jeepney runs over students; 1 dead, 7 injured

  By Jel Santos A teenage student died while his seven schoolmates were injured after a jeepney hit them as they were crossing a pedestrian lane in Makati City, Wednesday night. According to investigators, the wounded were aged 13 to 17, and are residents of Makati City. The driver of the errant jeepney was Crisalde Tamparong, 31, a native of Zamboanga del Sur, police said. He was driving a jeepney with license plates PYV 848. Around 7:20 p.m., the students were crossing a pedestrian lane on J.P. Rizal in Barangay Poblacion, Makati when the jeepney suddenly accelerated and hit them. Tamparong claimed that his jeepney lost its brakes, but it was seen on the closed-circuit television footage obtained by the cops that he stopped after he bumped the students. Colonel Rogelio Simon, Makati Police chief, said he will request for a drug test on the driver of the jeepney. Police said the victims were rushed to the Makati Medical Center and the Ospital ng Makati. Tamparong is now detained at the Makati Police Headquarters while charges are being prepared against him.
