PDEA, AFP sign accord on medical exams of recruits

By Chito Chavez The Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) and the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) forged on Wednesday a memorandum of agreement (MOA) pertaining to the review of medical and physical examination results of the applicants for entry-level positions of Drug Enforcement Officers (DEOs). (MANILA BULLETIN) (MANILA BULLETIN) Under the agreement, the AFP will provide professional services to PDEA with regards to the needed medical specialists composing the AFP Medical Board No. 1, for the review, reevaluation and revalidation of the DEO applicants’ Personal Health History Sheet; Physical Examination and Laboratory Results; Medical and Dental Examination Results; and related diagnostic procedures. The decision of the Medical Board will either be recommendatory or non-recommendatory in nature. Aquino explained that AFP Medical Board No. 1 provides the highest standards of medical/physical selection process in the AFP as exemplified by its processing and evaluation of Philippine Military Academy (PMA) candidates and qualifiers. The AFP Medical Board No.1 is composed of the following: a. Internist/ Cardiologist; b. General Surgeon; c. Radiologist; d. Ophthalmologist; e. ORL-HNS/ENT; f. OB-Gynecologist; and g. Orthopedic Surgeon/Specialist Aquino added the PDEA Academy regularly holds the Drug Enforcement Officers’ Basic Course (DEOBC), a six-month comprehensive and regimented training on drug law enforcement at the PDEA Academy, Camp General Mariano N. Castañeda, Silang, Cavite. The Academy is responsible for the recruitment, selection and training of all PDEA agents. “PDEA extends its deepest appreciation to the medical evaluation and validation assistance provided by the AFP Medical Board No. 1. The agreement is definitely a big boost to the selection process of aspiring PDEA agents to determine their fitness to undergo the rigorous DEOBC training,” Aquino said. The PDEA Academy is currently training 114 agent-trainees belonging to DEOBC Class 2019-17 who took their oath last November 7, 2019. They are expected to graduate this May, 2020 while 68 incoming agent-trainees of DEOBC Class 2019-18 are scheduled to begin their first day of training tomorrow, January 31.
