No less than DOT Secretary Bernadette Romulo-Puyat announced the projects that were approved by the Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority (TIEZA) while in the city for the recent Dianagyang Festival.
“TIEZA made sure Iloilo will have our steadfast support in terms of tourism infrastructure development,” Puyat assured.
Of the P340.7 million, a total of P135 million will be used to restore three different plazas in the city—Arevalo, La Paz and Molo. The restoration will be undertaken by the firm of renowned architect Paulo Alcazaren.
The remaining P240 million will be allocated for four different projects in Iloilo City, including the restoration of the Jaro Belfry, one of the bell towers in the country that stands apart from the church. The others will be for a tourist information center and restroom for the extension of the Iloilo Esplanade or river park, improvement of the Iloilo Convention Center, and improvement of the Sunburst Park.
Meanwhile, Puyat also met with tourism stakeholders for progress in the DOT-led initiative to make Iloilo as the next major destination for meetings, incentives, conferences, conventions, and exhibitions (MICE).
