The Judicial and Bar Council (JBC) submitted to President Duterte on Monday (Jan. 20) its 32 nominees to eight vacant positions in the Court of Appeals (CA), the country’s second highest court.

Nominated were Imelda M. Abadilla Brown, Philip Acosta Aguinaldo, Selma Palacio Alaras, Anisah B. Amanodin Umpa, Henry Sumaway Angeles, Edgar Oandasan Aricheta, Lorenza Redulla Bordios, Celilyn E. Burgos Villavert, Divinagracia G. Bustos Ongkeko, Emmanuel Claudio Carpio, Gler Bautista Corpin Jr.;
Rowena Dela Cruz De Juan Quinagoran, Jose Lorenzo Relova Dela Rosa, Amado Paolo Calinog Dimayuga, Olivia V. Escubio Samar, Wilhelmina B. Jorge Wagan, Raymond Reynold Reyes Lauigan, Mary Josephine Dela Pena Lazaro, Robert Nomar Varona Leyretana, Virgilio Valdez Macaraig, Richard Daniot Mordeno, Mia Joy C. Oallares Cawed;

They were nominated to replace CA Associate Justices Ramon Paul L. Hernando, Rosmari D. Carandang, Henri Jean Paul B. Inting, and Amy C. Lazaro Javier, who were all promoted to associate justice of the Supreme Court (SC); and retired CA Associate Justices Normandie B. Pizarro, Carmelita S. Manahan, Sesinando E. Villon, and Edward B. Contreras.
Most of the nominees are prosecutors and trial court judges.
The transmittal letter containing the names of the 32 nominees was signed by Chief Justice Diosdado M. Peralta as JBC chair, Justice Secretary Menardo I. Guevarra and Rep. Vicente S. E. Veloso III as ex-officio members, and Jose Catral Mendoza, Toribio Ilao Jr., Noel Jimenez Tijam, and Franklin J. Demonteverde as members.
Earlier, the JBC opened applications and recommendations for two positions: the post to be vacated by SC Associate Justice Andres B. Reyes Jr. who will compulsorily retire on May 11, 2020; and the post vacated by now-retired CA Presiding Justice Romeo R. Barza.
