PANTALEON GARCIA, IMUS, Cavite – A young man and his lady companion died, while two of their friends were seriously injured, before dawn Friday, January 10, when the sports utility vehicle (SUV) they were riding skidded off the road, turned sideways then hit a steel post on Aguinaldo Highway in Barangay San Vicente II, Silang town. The accident happened near a gasoline station at a dimly-lit portion of the highway. The black vehicle the victims were riding in was left a total wreck. The Silang police identified the fatalities as Denmark Noble Monforte, 21, driver of the car and a resident of Barangay Anahaw II, Silang, and a certain Alayna Atienza. Monforte died at the Estrella Hospital in Silang, at 1:15 a.m. Friday, while Atienza expired at the Silang Specialist Medical Center several hours after. Both suffered body injuries. Confined in serious condition with body injuries at the Silang Specialist Medical Center were Jasper Angelo Go de los Santos, 20, of 15 Marcelo H. del Pilar Street, Barangay Sabutan, Silang; and Kylie Alexis Acopio Arevalo, 19, a call center agent, of Regina Ville, Barangay Incencio, Trece Martires City, Cavite. Staff Sergeant Aries C. Mendoza, officer-on-case, reported that the accident occurred at 12:45 a.m. Friday Mendoza said that the car skidded as it swerved to the right and turned sideways before hitting the post near the Shell gasoline station. "Nag-hard turn right po yung sasakyan kaya po nag-skid," the investigator said. (The car skidded as it made a hard right turn.) The speeding car was travelling northbound to Manila at the time of the accident. The police were able to review what transpired in the accident from a closed-circuit television camera footage that was rendered by the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office. The footage showed that the car was fast approaching the gasoline station when it skidded, turned sideways and hit the post. Mendoza said that due to the impact, De los Santos, who was seated at the front seat, beside Monforte, was thrown out of the vehicle. Monforte, the driver, and Atienza and Arevalo, who were in the back seat, reportedly got stuck in the car. Responding rescuers brought all the victims to the hospitals. A local Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team was also at the site. It was not the first time that a vehicular accident had happened along the dangerous stretch of Aguinaldo Highway-Silang side. The Cavite Police Provincial Office (PPO) said that scores of accidents, mostly involving motorcycles and cars, have been reported on the highway in the past. Due to the spike of vehicle mishaps in the area, authorities declared the Aguinaldo Highway-Silang stretch as "accident-prone" or a "no helmet, no travel zone."
