The Filipino writer is lauded for her contributions in Tagalog literature and Filipino cultural identity. She is known for her famous work “Ang Kuwento ni Mabuti” (The Story of Mabuti), the first Tagalog short story to win in Palanca awards.
Matute was born in Santa Cruz, Manila and attended the University of Santo Tomas, where she obtained her PhD in 1964. She became a language teacher for over 45 years.
She wrote a number of historically based short stories that were included in many elementary and high school textbooks. She eventually retired as the Dean of the Filipino Department at Philippine Normal College (now Philippine Normal University) in 1980.
The Google Doodle is a special and temporary alteration of the logo on Google’s homepages intended to commemorate holidays, events, and notable historical figures.
