CAMP GEN. PANTALEON GARCIA, IMUS CITY, Cavite -- Some 61 persons were injured in firecracker explosions during the New Year revelry in Cavite, the country's most populous province.
Major Jonathan Abuel Asnan, chief of the PPO Operations Branch and Plans and Strategy Management Unit, confirmed that as of Wednesday (Jan. 1), 61 individuals were victims of firecracker blasts as reported by the police Tactical Operation Center (TOC) in each city and municipality.
Asnan reported that the victims mostly sustained minor injuries and were brought home after treatment in hospitals and clinics.
The Cavite Police Provincial Office (PPO) also said there was no report of any stray bullet incident in the province's eight districts during the New Year celebration, making this the second ‘zero stray bullet’ New Year in the province.
Two to seven stray bullet incidents a year were reported in the province in the annual revelries from 2010 to 2017. All the victims were hit in the arms, legs or body by bullets that seemingly came from nowhere.
Bacoor, General Mariano Alvarez (GMA) municipality, and Dasmariñas had the highest number of firecracker blasts as of 1 p.m. Wednesday, as follows: Bacoor had 13, GMA, 11; Dasmariñas,10; General Trias City and Rosario (Salinas), six each; Imus City, the province's capital, and Naic, five each; Trece Martires City, four; and Noveleta, 1.
Meanwhile, PPO reports showed that at least two fires struck in Dasmariñas City, the province's most populous area, on New Year's Eve.
The PPO confirmed that there were two fires reported in Dasmariñas: one in San Marino Subdivision, Barangay Salawag, and the other at Soar Homes, Barangay San Agustin I.
There were no casualties reported in the fires that gutted two residential houses for less than an hour on New Year's Eve, the Dasmariñas police reported.
The Cavite Provincial Epidemiology Surveillance Unit (PESU) is expected to render its New Year revelry casualty report on Thursday or Friday.
