Ronald "Bato" Dela Rosa (Bato Dela Rosa FACEBOOK / MANILA BULLETIN) Neophyte Senator Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa made this assessment as he expressed belief the President should not step down should his son, Davao City Representative Paolo Duterte becomes the House Speaker. But it is up to the President, dela Rosa said, whether or not he would carry out his threat. “Nasa sa kanya yan, kung tutuparin niya or hindi. Pero sa akin, bakit ka magre-resign kailangan ka pa namin, kailangan ka pa ng bansa (It’s up to him whether he will fulfill it. But for me, why should he resign? We still need you, the nation needs you),” Dela Rosa said in a Kapihan sa Senado forum. “Ang gusto na mag-resign siya siguro ang opposition para sila naman ang kapalit. (The ones who want him to resign are the opposition, so they can take over). Kaya ganun ang gusto nila, na ‘you must be true to your words so that we must be true to our ambition’,” he pointed out. Duterte earlier said he would resign should his son Paolo, vie to be the House Speaker. Rep. Duterte had earlier threatened to step in the leadership struggle between Reps. Alan Peter Cayetano, Lord Allan Velasco, and Martin Romualdez. Palace officials have said the President can still “change” his mind about his promise to resign.
