DepEd celebrates 121st Foundation Day

The Department of Education (DepEd) enjoined schools and offices as well as its personnel to take part in activities related to the agency’s 121st Foundation Day.

(DEPED / MANILA BULLETIN) Education Secretary Leonor Briones, in DepEd Memorandum No. 77 series of 2019 issued to undersecretaries, assistant secretaries, bureau service directors, regional directors, schools division superintendents and heads of public and private elementary and secondary schools, announced the celebration of DepEd’s 121st Foundation Day on Friday, June 21. With the theme, “DepEd Para sa Pilipino,” Briones said that the celebration is pursuant to Administrative Order No. 322 s. of 1997 issued by former President Fidel V. Ramos that recognizes June 23, 1898, as the Foundation Day of the Department. In order to “promote the public awareness” of the event, the DepEd Central Office enjoins all personnel, offices, and officials at the regional, schools division offices and schools to “produce information and communication materials” by hanging of DepEd 121st Foundation Day official streamer in all offices and schools and wearing of blue shirts/polo/blouses on June 21, 2019 “in support of the celebration.” The agency also urged its personnel to “participate in DepEd’s online celebration” by changing their Facebook cover using DepEd 121st Foundation Day tarpaulin or streamer design and by “sharing of stories highlighting the most unforgettable DepEd experiences” using the hashtags, #DepEd121 and #DepEdParaSaPilipino in social media accounts. Briones said that the announcing of all offices and schools to include DepEd’s 121st Foundation Day announcement in their respective Flag Raising ceremonies on June 17, 2019. All offices and schools were also encouraged to organize their own activities following this year’s theme. Schools and other DepEd offices are also enjoined to “organize activities based on the theme” by partnering with the National Commission for Culture and the Arts and the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) for the return of the opera show entitled “Noli Me Tangere, The Opera Touch Me Not” at the CCP which shall be attended by selected teachers and learners on June 21, 2019, and by DepEd officials and staff on June 22, 2019. In an earlier memorandum, Briones has invited select DepEd teachers, learners, officials and staff to watch the said opera which is a production sponsored by DepEd in partnership with the NCCA and the CPP. Watching the opera, Briones said, is also in support of the current administration’s agenda for “cultural awareness and appreciation.” Considered as a “landmark” production, she explained that the opera aims to “provide a great opportunity for high school teachers and students to explore a period in the Philippines history presented through vivid artistic performance.” Aside from promoting patriotism and nationalism, she noted that watching the said production will “expose our stakeholders to a wealth of educational resources through theater art.” Briones reminded that the participants shall be on official business, thus, travel expenses and other incidental expenses of regional attendees will be charged to their respective local funds, subject to existing accounting and auditing rules and regulations. DepEd reminded that “no funds or money should be collected from the teachers, learners, or guests that will be invited in the show.”
