The Big One to spare Caloocan

Caloocan City is in no immediate danger when The Big One comes because it is not located along the West Valley Fault, an official from the Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (DRRMO) said.

However, DRRMO Action Officer Alex Nadurata said Dagat-Dagatan is the most vulnerable area in Caloocan as it is a reclaimed area.

“Dating palaisdaan kasi ‘yon, mas soft ‘yung soil nila kasi mga buhangin lang tinabon don, ginawang housing project ‘yan (That area was a fishery before, the ground is softer because sand was used as its foundation for a housing project),” he said.

Nadurata added that the houses in the area are not stable because “they are not built by housing engineers.”

“Kaya plus one, ibig sabihin kung Intensity 6 dito, pwedeng Intensity 7 doon kasi soft soil ang foundation nila (So when an earthquake is registered at Intensity 6 here, it might be experienced at Intensity 7 there, because their foundation is soft soil),” he said.

Nadurata said the Caloocan DRRMO has conducted various trainings and seminars in preparation for The Big One.

Quarterly earthquake drills are also being done in various establishments, including schools.

All of the residents who live in critical areas, such as waterways, were also relocated for their safety.

As of Tuesday, there were no recorded casualties, injuries, or damages in the city.
