TACLOBAN CITY – An attack by an armed group in a remote village in Gandara, Samar Friday turned out to be deadly for the attackers, themselves, after they accidentally shot one of their companions in the head and killed him instantly.

According to Gandara police chief P/Capt. Joselito Tabada, Zosimo Casaljay, who had a standing warrant of arrest for murder, succumbed to a gunshot wound in the head when he and a group of 11 armed men strafed the houses in Barangay San Antonio, which is three hours away from Gandara town proper.
"The attack was disorganized so when the people scampered, the assailants who were on the high ground accidentally hit their own companion who was on the lower ground, which caused his death," Tabada explained.
He said the group was led by a certain Edgar Washington.
"The assailants peppered the houses with bullets, including the house of the village chair, Ramon Corocoto Sr., causing the people to scamper in different directions," he narrated.
The other suspects were identified as Jason Wahingon, Ruel Wahingon, Onyot Wahingon, Erwin Loberando, Constancio Sumagdon, Jun Verano, Joel Suarino, Zosimo Casaljay, a certain Pagras, Ronick, Olok, and Dunggaw.
They are all believed to be residents of Barangay Olira in Calbayog City.
Tabada suspects that the harassment was politically motivated since the assailants were known leaders of a political party which could be at odds with the village’s officials.
Authorities were able to recover empty shells and slugs of high caliber firearms and pistols in the crime scene.
The body of the slain assailant was brought to the town proper for postmortem examination.
