Sandiganbayan OKs Honasan's China trip

By Czarina Nicole Ong-Ki The Sandiganbayan Second Division has granted the motion filed by Senator Gregorio "Gringo" Honasan II, seeking to travel to Guangdong, China from April 21 to 27. Sen. Vice President Daniel Guo Zhi to visit their headquarters in Shenzhen City. Honasan said his travel was a "gesture of good faith and sincerity," and it is intended mainly for the visit to the Huawei office. "Senator Honasan warrants that this intended travel is not for the purpose of absconding or evading prosecution of this case, pending before the honorable court," the motion read. For its part, the anti-graft court granted his motion over the objection of the prosecution. He was required to pay a travel bond of P120,000. Honasan was earlier slapped with violations of Section 3(e) of R.A. 3019 or the Anti-Graft and Corrupt Practices Act due to the alleged misuse of his P29.1 million priority development assistance fund (PDAF) back in 2012. He was indicted for releasing his PDAF to the National Council of Muslim Filipinos (NCMF) in April 2012, which was meant to help small and medium-scale livelihood projects for Muslim Filipinos in the National Capital Region (NCR) and Zambales. Honasan endorsed Focus Development Goals Foundation, Inc. on June 2012 as the implementing non-government organization (NGO). However, Ombudsman investigators discovered that the NGO was endorsed even without the benefit of compliance with procurement regulations. At the same time, the check and disbursement voucher dated May 30, 2012 were prepared for Focus even before the NGO was informed it was qualified to undertake the project on June 4, 2012.
