Addressing Ilonggos during the launch of her “Ahon Laylayan” coalition, Robredo took the opportunity to let them know about Marcos’ failure to taint her win in the vice presidential race.
Iloilo is one of the three pilot provinces Marcos had chosen for the initial vote recount in his election case. The others are Camarines Sur, which is Robredo’s home province, and Negros Oriental.
“Nadamay po kayo, nag-file sa akin ng protesta ‘yong kalaban ko sa eleksyon. Ang sabi niya, nandaya daw po ako nang grabe dito sa Iloilo. Binuksan naman ‘yong mga balota—walang nakitang pandaraya dahil hindi naman nandadaya ang mga tao dito sa Iloilo,” she said.
This part of Robredo’s speech drew loud applause and cheers from the crowd.
The Vice President won by a landslide in Iloilo, where she received 573,829 votes, compared to 94,411 votes for Marcos.
In Iloilo City, which the Presidential Electoral Tribunal considers separate from the province, she obtained 137,662 votes, higher than Marcos’ 100,000 votes.
Robredo, chair of the opposition Liberal Party, appreciated the overwhelming support of Iloilo.
The lady official said she has much love to Ilonggos because of her victory during the 2016 elections in the province.
Apart from the launch, Robredo was in Iloilo on Wednesday to attend a series of meetings with various sectoral leaders and members. She also campaigned for the eight-member “Otso Diretso” slate.
With her were Magdalo Representative Gary Alejano, former solicitor general Florin Hilbay, ex-Quezon congressman Erin Tañada, and Marawi civic leader Samira Gutoc.
The Vice President is hopeful the Ilonggos would vote for the opposition senatorial candidates in May.
“Sana magtranslate siya, kasi iyong Iloilo naman, kapag titignan natin history ng botohan dito, parati very intelligent iyong voters, very discerning… So very hopeful ako na makaka-harvest kami dito ng maraming boto,” she said.
