Police Brigadier General Joselito Esquivel Jr., Quezon City Police District (QCPD) director, said he already ordered a further investigation on the incident to determine any possible foul play or negligence of the building administration.
Police report showed that the victim, identified as Michael Alfonso, 37, and witness Gerard Mondia, just came out from a fitness gym at the 3rd floor of Cyberpark Tower 1 at Araneta Center in Cubao around 9:10 p.m. last Saturday.
Police said Alfonso was looking for a comfort room to change his clothes when he opened a door which turned out to be an emergency service door of a high-zone elevator shaft.
Alfonso allegedly fell accidentally and landed on top of an elevator box at the building’s basement.
The victim’s companion immediately sought assistance from the duty guard who called up an ambulance and brought Alfonso to World Citi Medical Center but was declared dead on arrival.
Cursory examination on the victim’s body showed that he sustained head injuries and bone fracture on his left arm which caused his death.
According to the police, the victim might mistook the elevator shaft door to a restroom door as no warning or signage were indicated.
Meanwhile, in a statement, the Cyberpark 1 management extends sympathy to the family of the victim and said that it “will do its best to provide necessary assistance in their time of grief.”
The management added that it is also conducting its own investigation into this “highly unusual incident,” and is “cooperating fully with the ongoing police investigation.
