Marines intercept boat with 37 sacks of ammonium nitrate

By Nonoy Lacson  ZAMBOANGA CITY – Government authorities intercepted a motor boat carrying 37 sacks of ammonium nitrate, an ingredient component used in making bombs and other explosives, and arrested four people on board. Naval Forces Western Mindanao (NavForWeM) Commander Rear Admiral Erick A Kagaoan reported yesterday that Marines intercepted a motorized boat at Simisa island in Banguingui, Sulu that was found to be loaded with 37 sacks of ammonium nitrate bound for Isabela City last Thursday, March 14. Kagaoan also said four persons were arrested on the boat. They were Mambahu Buhali 48, and his wife Norma, 35, Jailani Jalali 57 and Larry Jalali 25, all residents of Tampakan, Laminusa in Siasi, Sulu. He said the chemical was concealed in 37 sacks of 25 kilos per sacks. While farmers use ammonium nitrate as fertilizers, people in areas like Basilan and Sulu province are use it for making improvised explosive devices (IEDs). The marines towed and brought the sea craft to the Marine Battalion Landing Team 1 Tactical Command Post, located at Simisa Island, Banguingui, Sulu for custodial, while the apprehended persons were turned over to Sulu PNP for proper disposition. According to Kagaoan the Philippine Navy and the AFP as a whole will continue its effort to deny the presence of illegal activities in its area of operation.
