BUTUAN CITY - A magnitude 5.1 tectonic earthquake shook Davao Occidental province late Tuesday afternoon, Feb. 12, 2019, , the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported.

The regional office of the Southern Mindanao Office of Civil Defense and disaster risk reduction and management council (DRRMC) reported no damage or injury.
In its bulletin, Phivolcs said the earthquake struck at 4:01 p.m.
The epicenter was plotted 103 kilometers southeast of Sarangani, Davao Occidental province.
Intensity 1 was also registered in Kiamba and Alabel, Sarangani.
The tremor generated from the Cotabato trench, Phivolcs said.
The Philippines lies in the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” where colliding plates in the earth’s crust cause frequent earthquakes and volcanic activity.
