Local gov’t, police list 180 firecracker zones in Quezon City

In a bid to observe safe New Year revelries, the Quezon City government and the local police reminded residents to only use firecrackers in the 180 zones that officials had designated across the City.

Police Brigadier General Ronnie Montejo, chief of the Quezon City Police District (QCPD), said these "firecracker zones" were identified to refrain the public from using firecrackers and similar pyrotechnics on the road, and to reduce any firecracker-related injuries

Montejo added that authorities will be able to keep a closer watch to those violators and can respond promptly particularly to those who will use illegal firecrackers.

According to Montejo, the use of fireworks outside the designated zones and use of illegal fireworks are both prohibited as stated in the City Ordinance No. 2618, s.2017.

Under the ordinance, anyone who will violate will be fined P5,000 and/or will be imprisoned by one year.

"Gusto po natin na maging mapayapa at ligtas ang pagsalubong sa taong 2020, kaya po nananawagan tayo sa lahat na kung maaari ay sa mga itinalagang 'firecracker zones' sa kani-kanilang barangay na lang sila manood o magpaputok upang maiwasan ang disgrasya," he added.

(We want to welcome the year 2020 with a peaceful and safe celebration, so we urge everyone to please use firecrackers only in the designated zones in their respective villages to prevent any untoward incidents or injuries.)

The QCPD director also called on the public to patronize only authorized firecrackers and pyrotechnics and to buy only to those legitimate sellers and retailers.

He also appealed to gun holders, civilians and uniformed personnel alike, to be "very responsible by not firing their guns indiscriminately."

"We encourage the neighborhood to report anybody who shall be firing their guns indiscriminately during the New Year so that they will be arrested and charged," Montejo said.

Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte also encouraged the public to watch and enjoy community fireworks displays that will be simultaneously staged by the city government and other partner establishments in various parts of the city at 12 midnight to usher in the new year.

These community fireworks displays will be held at the Quezon City Memorial Circle, La Loma Area (Calavite corner A. Bonifacio Ave., Barangay Paang Bundok), Novaliches Area (SB Plaza, Barangay Novaliches Proper) and Eastwood Mall Open Park.
