Typhoon "Ursula" (international name "Phanfone") has maintained its strength while heading out of the country on Friday after it battered the central area of the Philippines during the Yuletide season.
(PAGASA / MANILA BULLETIN)
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said Ursula is now moving over the West Philippine Sea prior to its projected exit out of the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR) on Saturday morning.
In its 11 a.m. weather bulletin, PAGASA said Ursula was last spotted 365 kilometers west of Subic, Zambales, and continued to pack a maximum sustained winds of 120 kilometers per hour near the center and gusts of up to 150 kilometers per hour.
PAGASA said Ursula was no longer affecting the country directly, and was already moving north northwest at 10 kilometers per hour.
All typhoon signals have been lifted by the weather bureau since Thursday as the typhoon is now far from the country's landmass.
Ursula greeted residents in the Visayas region with destructive winds and heavy rains on Christmas Eve as it made its first landfall in Eastern Samar afternoon of December 24.
The typhoon also made two more landfalls on Christmas Eve -- in Tacloban City, Leyte and in Cabucgayan, Biliran --and four landfalls on Christmas Day -- in Gigantes Islands, Carles, Iloilo; Ibajay, Aklan; Semirara Island, Caluya, Antique, and last in Bulalacao, Oriental Mindoro
Ursula left a trail of destruction in areas in its path as it made its way towards the West Philippine Sea.
After exiting PAR, PAGASA said Ursula may weaken into a severe tropical storm, and further downgrade to a low pressure area (LPA) or may dissipate before hitting Vietnam.
Other weather disturbances
While Ursula no longer directly affects the country, the tail-end of a cold front is expected to dump moderate to occasional heavy rains over most parts of Northern Luzon.
Cloudy skies with scattered rainshowers and isolated thunderstorms will prevail over Ilocos Region, Cordillera Administrative Region, Cagayan Valley and Aurora due to the tail-end of a cold front.
PAGASA said the downpour may trigger flooding and landslides in highly to very highly susceptible areas.
While Metro Manila and the rest of the country will experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rainshowers caused by localized thunderstorms.
The bureau also warned residents on possible flash floods and landslides during severe thunderstorms.
Gale warning
Meanwhile, strong to gale force winds associated with the northeast monsoon or "amihan" are expected to the seaboards of Northern Luzon, particularly the coasts of Batanes, Calayan, Babuyan, Cagayan, Ilocos Norte, and Ilocos Sur.
The state weather bureau said seas on the coasts where a gale warning was raised will be rough to very rough with wave heights reaching up to 4.5 meters.
Sea travel remains risky, especially for small sea crafts, over seaboards where a gale warning was raised, PAGASA said
Ursula was the second tropical cyclone that entered PAR this December after Typhoon "Tisoy," and the 21st and probably the last that hit the country this year.
In 2018, deadly Tropical Depression "Usman" also hit the country on Christmas, leaving a total of 156 people dead and 105 others injures in Eastern Visayas, Bicol, and Mimaropa.
