Typhoon “Ursula” (international name: “Phanfone”) has made seven landfalls in 24 hours as it hopped from one island to another while crossing the Visayas and Southern Luzon on its way to the West Philippine Sea.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said the island-hopping Ursula first made landfall in Salcedo, Eastern Samar at 4:45 p.m., December 24; then in Tacloban City, Leyte at 7:30 p.m., December 24; Cabucgayan, Biliran at 9:15 p.m., December 24; Gigantes Islands, Carles, Iloilo at 2:30 a.m., December 25; Ibajay, Aklan at 8:40 a.m., December 25; Semirara Island, Caluya, Antique at 1 p.m., December 25; and the southern tip of Bulalacao, Oriental Mindoro at 3 p.m., December 25.
As of 5 p.m., Wednesday, Ursula remains a strong cyclone with maximum sustained winds of 140 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gustiness of up to 195 kph.
Tropical cyclone wind signals have been lifted over Metro Manila, Rizal, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Albay, Masbate including Ticao and Burias Islands, Cagayancillo Island, northern Negros Occidental, Iloilo, and Guimaras, while it has been lowered elsewhere.
Signal No. 3, however, remains hoisted over southern Oriental Mindoro, southern Occidental Mindoro, and Calamian Islands.
Signal No. 2 remains in effect in Romblon, Batangas, Marinduque, rest of Oriental Mindoro, rest of Occidental Mindoro including Lubang Island, Cuyo Islands, extreme northern portion of mainland Palawan, northern Antique, and northwestern Aklan.
Meanwhile, signal No. 1 is still up in Bataan, Cavite, Laguna, rest of northern mainland Palawan, southern portion of Quezon, Capiz, rest of Antique, and rest of Aklan.
The eye wall of Ursula was bringing “very destructive” winds and intense rainfall over southern portion of Oriental and Occidental Mindoro, while Calamian Islands will be affected next by the eye wall.
“In case of the passage of the eye in some of the aforementioned areas, calm conditions will be experienced. However, as soon as the eye moves out of the area, violent conditions associated with the eye wall will resume,” PAGASA said.
Occasional to frequent heavy with intermittent intense rains will prevail over Calamian Islands, Cuyo Islands, and Oriental and Occidental Mindoro, while light to moderate with intermittent heavy rains are expected over Romblon, Aklan, Capiz, Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, Quezon, Marinduque, Aurora, and northern portion of mainland Palawan.
Rough sea conditions are also likely to prevail over the seaboards of areas under tropical cyclone warnings. Sea travel remains risky over these areas.
Meanwhile, storm surge of 1 to 2 meters may affect several coastal areas in Negros Occidental and Calamian Islands.
PAGASA weather specialist Chris Perez said “Ursula” will likely be outside the Philippine area of responsibility by Saturday.
