House Bill No. 554, principally authored by Ilocos Sur Rep. Kristine Singson-Meehan was adopted as House Resolution No. 24, before Congress adjourned for a month-long Christmas break.
Singson-Meehan described Cuanang as "outstanding and exemplary Filipino” who has invaluable contribution to the country’s nation building.
“For more than 60 years, his unselfish devotion in the promotion of arts and culture has touched the lives of every Filipino, and it is only proper to honor him, his works, achievements and contributions, as he is truly an outstanding and exemplary Filipino who is an inspiration to everyone,” the two-page resolution said.
Singson-Meehan cited that Cuanang has a long, extensive and distinguished career in the field of medicine as a medical doctor and a neurologist.
“He graduated cum laude at the College of Medicine of the University of the East in Sta. Mesa, and at the very young age of 21, he was then the youngest graduate of medicine in the UE’s first 50 years,” she noted.
Cuanang completed his graduate studies, as China Medical Board Clinical and Research Fellow in Clinical Neurology, at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital and became Chief Fellow in Neurology at the University of California Davis.
“He came back to the Philippines, resisting the trend for medical graduates of the 1960s, of whom nay opted to stay in the United States,” Singson-Meehan said.
Aside from serving as professor of neurology, and later, Dean of the College of Medicine of UE, Cuanang became Senior Vice President for Medical Affairs and Medical Director of St. Luke’s Medical Center, she said.
“Through his vision, commitment, perseverance, and love of country, he is instrumental in making St. Luke’s Medical Center into what it is today—the best in the country, and one of the top ranked hospitals in Asia,” the woman lawmaker said.
She also noted that Cuanang also sits as director of the Asian Cultural Council and put up Pintô Art Museum with collections which include works by famous artists.
He also "created Pintô International, where he promotes Filipino artists and their works in the international stage, providing support, encouraging greater and broader appreciation for their works, fostering cultural diplomacy,” Singson-Meehan said.
