Almost 200 patients at the National Children’s Hospital (NCH) were evacuated after a fire razed parts of the building on Tuesday morning.
Bureau of Fire Protection-Quezon City (BFP-QC) fire marshal Senior Superintendent Jaime Ramirez said the blaze started in the storage area at the seventh floor of NCH Annex Building along E. Rodriguez Sr. Boulevard in Barangay Damayang Lagi, Quezon City.
Ramirez added that the fire reached first and second alarm right after it broke out at around 10:28 a.m.
The blaze reached third alarm at about 10:32 a.m. as there are combustible materials such as papers stored in the room.
The fire lasted for at least 25 minutes before it was declared out at 10:53 a.m.
No patients were harmed during the incident as they were immediately evacuated by the hospital staff to a nearby fastfood restaurant which is the establishment's holding area.
"We had to evacuate all the patients Trained naman po ang mga nurses namin, mga doctors and employees na kapag mayroong kalamidad (All our nurses, doctors, and employees are trained that when calamities strike) like fire or earthquake, they have to see to it that all the patients are brought out of the hospital," Dr. Moriel Creencia, Chief Medical Professional Staff of the NCH, told the Manila Bulletin.
According to Creencia, at least 190 patients at their annex building, even those who were in areas not affected by the fire, were also evacuated.
"We just have to clear the area which has been affected. That building is off limits for now so we can clean it up," Creencia said.
The evacuated patients are currently staying in the safe areas of the hospital such the conference rooms while the floor hit by the fire is being cleaned.
"We have to make sure that the patients are safe when they go back," she added.
Fire probers are still investigating the cause of the fire while the estimated damages were pegged at around P200,000. (With initial report from MB Online)
