2 dead, 16 injured in Cavite road mishap

CAMP GEN. PANTALEON GARCIA, IMUS, Cavite – Two persons, including a septuagenarian, were confirmed dead on Tuesday morning while 16 others, including minors, were injured, some of them seriously, when a wayward cargo truck filled with sand rammed a jeepney, two tricycles and other vehicles on a road in Barangay Poblacion II in upland Mendez-Nunez municipality.

The driver of the 18-wheeler delivery truck with plate NAS 5923, Romeo Sicat Sevilla, 49, a resident of Batasan Matanda, San Miguel, Bulacan, was placed under detention by responding police officers.
Sevilla was also reportedly injured in the accident. The truck hit vehicles that were traveling and stalled on the road in the municipal proper.
The accident happened near a church on Jose P. Rizal Street and Mendez-Indang Road at 7:15 a.m. Tuesday.
Major Jonathan Abuel Asnan, the chief of the Cavite Police Provincial Office (PPO) Operations Branch and Plans and Strategy Management Unit, citing a report from Mendez-Nunez police, identified the two victims who died on the spot as Rolando Atienza Ligsa, 72, and Rogelio Flores Santos, 58.
Injured were Marcelino Garcia Felicia, 45; Daniel Anthony C. Nuestro, 13; Fred Encarnacion Berzuela, 31; James Ashley De Luna Chua, 19; Renzo Oliverio Mojica, 12; Kelvin Umandap Alcedo, 19; Hendrick Dimapilis Sumagui 42; Mary Grace Cleote Sanga, 36; Pamela Kayra R. Ferma, 20; Marco Toledo Pulos, 20; Joel Andes Lorilla, 52; Fatima Pireda Nuestro, 24; Edwardo Pepa Dimaranan, 58; Madeline Grace Cudyamat, 18; and William Espiritu Miserecolya, 44.
The victims, who hailed mostly from Mendez-Nunez and some from Tagaytay City and Amadeo, were brought to the Ospital ng Tagaytay,
Corporal Christian Espiritu, case investigator, reported that the truck driven by Sevilla lost its brakes while travelling along the road, then rammed and sideswiped different vehicles along the road.
The impact even caused a passenger jeepney to flip on its side.
Police have yet to determine if Ligsa and Santos were vehicle passengers or drivers. Espiritu said that the investigation on the accident was still ongoing.
The municipal authorities conducted clearing operations at the accident site. Police have yet to determine the cost of damage caused by the accident.
Sevilla confirmed that the brakes of the truck he was driving malfunctioned. He was with two helpers at the time of the accident, it was gathered.
Espiritu said the police was readying charges of reckless imprudence resulting in double homicide, multiple physical injuries and damage to property against Sevilla.
It was the first time in years that such road tragedy occurred in Mendez-Nunez, a sleepy town in southern Cavite.
The Mendez-Nunez accident was only one of the fatal vehicular accidents that was reported in upland and lowland province in December and the previous months. The vehicles involved were motorcycles, trucks, buses, jeepneys and cars.
Cavite Governor Juanito Victor "Jonvic" Remulla Jr. said that he would look into the causes of the road accidents now and then in Cavite.
"We are investigating the cause(s) of the mishap(s). Our statistics generally show that our roads are safe. We don't want to jump to any conclusions," Remulla told this reporter.
