Residents treated to giant basket of pancit Malabon

About 500 residents of Malabon City were treated to a giant winnowing basket, or “bilao”, of the iconic Pancit Malabon during a festival in Barangay Concepcion in Malabon City Tuesday morning.

The giant basket of Pancit Malabon, overloaded with toppings and measuring 15 feet in diameter, was served to local government officials and about 500 residents who attended the event.

The Pancit Malabon Festival, formerly called Luglugan, is an annual event in the city showcasing the renowned culinary treat. The festival also marks the end of the celebration of the feast of the Immaculate Concepcion.

Pancit Malabon is a popular stir-fried noodle dish that has a yellow-orange color from annatto seeds, and is flavored with shrimp broth, fish sauce, and crab fat. It is usually garnished with pork, hard-boiled eggs, and local fresh seafood, like cooked shrimp.

“Ang Pancit Malabon Festival ay bahagi ng mayamang kultura ng lungsod (The Pancit Malabon Festival is a part of the city’s rich culture),” Malabon Mayor Antolin Oreta said during the festival.

The city mayor said that not only does the festival promote Pancit Malabon, it also fosters a better sense of community among the city’s residents.
