Marikina places residents on alert, preps personnel for 24/7 duty for #TisoyPH

(JHON ALDRIN CASINAS / MANILA BULLETIN) CDRRMO and Marikina Rescue 161 chief Dave David told the Manila Bulletin that concerned departments and agencies in the city were on heightened alert for the approaching severe weather disturbance. “Residents in low-lying areas are advised to be always ready and on alert for announcements from the local government,” David said in an interview. “Our personnel will be on duty 24/7,” he added. He said that evacuation camps in predetermined areas in the city have already been prepared and are ready to accept evacuees. The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) has placed Metro Manila under typhoon Signal No. 2. According to the state weather bureau, Typhoon Tisoy is expected to make landfall in the Bicol Region on Monday night or early Tuesday morning. Local government units in the National Capital Region have already suspended classes on all levels, both in public and private schools, in anticipation of inclement weather. The CDRRMO chief urged residents to remain calm, adding that they still have time to prepare their belongings in case they will be advised to evacuate their homes. Marikina frequently experiences flooding during torrential rains because the city serves as a catch basin of rainwater coming from the mountainous areas of Rizal. Local officials also closely monitor the water level in Marikina River, the city’s main waterway, whenever heavy rains drench the metropolis and the city’s surrounding provinces. On Sunday night, Marikina City Mayor Marcelino Teodoro declared the suspension of classes on all levels in the city on Monday, both in public and private schools, because of the typhoon. City personnel on Monday also dismantled the huge canopy of Marikina Shoe Bazaar located at the Freedom Park in front of the City Hall in anticipation of inclement weather.
