While Argentina dominates the world of polo in terms of horsepower and sporting skill, the rip-roaring, lifestyle sport is now played in so many countries, especially in Europe, from Germany to France to less obvious places such as Norway and the Czech Republic. In Southeast Asia (SEA), Brunei, Indonesia, Philippines, and Malaysia, some of nations that excel in the sport, are currently clashing over two gold medals over the 30th SEA Games this year.
The Miguel Romero Polo Field in Calatagan, Batangas is the second venue, next to the Iñigo Zobel Polo Facility, for the equestrian games during the biggest sporting event in Southeast Asia. Sportsman and Rep. Mikee Romero dedicates the 30-hectare estate to his late son by naming the polo field, into which the estate has been transformed in time for the Sea Games, after him.
The grounds boast of world-class facilities such as the bamboo pavilion, well-ventilated and spacious stables, a quarter-mile exercise track with a scientifically designed surface preventing injuries to the horse’s legs, gazebos, and the Tifton-covered field. It hosts its first polo match for the Sea Games this Tuesday, Dec. 3.
