It marked the first time that Duterte attended the event since he became President.
In 2016, the President went to Lanao del Sur to visit soldiers fighting members of the Maute Group at the time.
He skipped the event in 2017 since he was visiting a “conflict area” in Mindanao, according to then Presidential spokesman Harry Roque.
Last year, National Security Adviser Hermogenes Esperon Jr. said the President was absent from the ceremony because he had important matters to attend to in Mindanao, including the arrest of Satur Ocampo in Davao for allegedly kidnapping 14 children.
Aside from Duterte, other officials who attended this year's Bonifacio Day rites include Dr. Rene Escalante, National Historial Commission of the Philippines chairman; Gen. Noel Clement, Armed Forces of the Philippines Chief of Staff; Caloocan City Mayor Oscar “Oca” Malapitan; Caloocan City First District Rep. Dale Gonzalo Malapitan; Caloocan City Second District Rep. Edgar “Egay” Erice; and Paulo Bonifacio, a descendant of the celebrated hero.
“Isang daan at limampu't anim na taon na ang nakalipas mula noong pagsilang ng Ama ng Himagsikan na si Gat Andres Bonifacio, ngunit hanggang ngayon ay buhay pa ang ating mga puso at alaala para sa kanyang katapangan at maigting na pagmamahal sa bayan (A hundred and fifty-six years have passed since the birth of the Father of the Philippine Revolution who is Gat Andres Bonifacio, but until now, our hearts and minds keep his bravery and firm love for our country alive),” Malapitan said in his speech.
“This monument is an everlasting salute and remembrance of the patriotism that was shown by our hero,” he added.
This year's theme for Bonifacio Day is “Bonifacio 2019: Pagpupugay at Pag-alala sa Kagitingang Ipinamalas.”
Commemorative events were also held in other sites, namely: Museo ng Paglilitis ni Andres Bonifacio at Maragondon, Cavite; Bonifacio Monument at Balintawak in Quezon City; Bonifacio Monument at Tutuban Center in Manila; Bonifacio Monument at Bonifacio Global City in Taguig; and the Pinaglabanan Memorial Shrine in San Juan City.
