By Tara Yap The National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP) lamented how deaths and threats to Filipino journalists continue even 10 years after the Maguindanao massacre, which killed 58 people including 32 journalists. (NUJP / MANILA BULLETIN) “Even after the massacre, the deaths and threats did not stop,” noted Nestor Burgos Jr., one of NUJP’s national directors. The November 23, 2009 incident is considered by the Committee to Protect Journalists, a New York-based non-profit group, as the single-deadliest incident involving journalists anywhere in the world. Since 1986, death toll of reporters in the country has reached 186.  Out of the 186, 14 were killed under the Duterte administration. NUJP is also alarmed with the growing threats faced by journalists online. “Currently, we’ve noticed the prevalence of online attacks against media who critically report on policies of the government, particularly the war on drugs and the territorial dispute with China,” noted Burgos. “This is unprecedented. Even female journalists face sexual threats online,” Burgos pointed out. But Burgos clarified that NUJP was not blaming the government for all the media-related deaths or threats, but there are cases wherein officials were involved, while the dispensation of justice has been very slow as shown in the Maguindanao massacre. The 32 reporters, who died in the Maguindanao massacre, joined a convoy that accompanied the group of Esmael “Toto” Mangudadatu, who sent his wife to file his certificate of candidacy as he was running against the powerful Ampatuan political clan.
