Marcos files bill extending barangay, SK terms of office

Beleo) Senator Imee Marcos (Erwin Beleo / MB FILE PHOTO) The current three years of tenure of the barangay officials and SK members might not be enough for effective implementation of their plans and programs, said Marcos, a former Ilocos Norte governor. The Senate Bill 1105 that Marcos just filed stated that no barangay elective official shall serve for more than two consecutive terms in the same position, voluntary renunciation of office for any length of time shall not be considered as an interruption in the continuity of service for the full term for which the elective official was elected. All incumbent barangay and SK officials shall remain in office unless sooner removed or suspended for cause until their successors shall have been elected and qualified. The bill stated that provisions of the Omnibus Election Code relative to the failure of elections and special elections are reiterated. Marcos stressed that barangay officials and SK members play a key role in their respective communities by enforcing laws and ordinances, maintaining public order, and ensuring the delivery of basic services. Last September 30, voting 21-0, the Senate approved on third and final reading the bill postponing the barangay and SK elections to December 5, 2022. Senate Bill No. 1043 is pushing to hold the village and youth polls in 2022, with the proposal to conduct subsequent elections every three years. The Commission on Elections (Comelec) already gave assurances that they could manage the logistics of holding two elections in the same year, Marcos said.
