Nida Blanca shines even in death; fans visit despite rain

Even in death, the shine of veteran actress Nida Blanca, Dorothy Jones in real life, did not fade as her fans flocked to her tomb despite the downpour on November 1.

Sodoria Suyong, 63, a househelp, currently residing in Makati City, went to the tomb of Blanca. She has been a fan of Blanca since she was young.
"When I was 10 years old, I've been watching her shows and movies in Lanao del Sur," she said in Filipino.
"She is a very great actress. We love her very much. We, her fans, usually see each other here during All Saints' Day. We go here to pray for her," she added.
Another fan, 65-year-old Susan Marquez, was also visiting her idol for the 15th time since Blanca died in 2001.
“I am also a very big fan of Nida Blanca. Since I was a child, I am already a fan of her,” she said.
Marquez said that she became an extra of the film Family Tree, and sitcom John en Marsha, where her idol Nida Blanca starred.
“She was very kind to everyone. That is one of the attributes I liked about her. I became an extra of her two shows so I was able to work with her,” she recalled.
After learning the gruesome death of her idol, Marquez said that she was very upset that she cried the whole day, grieving the demise of Blanca.
“I really cried. I was very sad after I learned about what happened to her,” she said.
Teresita Antonio, 69, niece of Blanca, said that sometimes they just find flowers on top of the toms, as well as candles.
“We are happy that her fans still remember her. There are so many times that we see that there are flowers and candles on her tomb,” she told the Manila Bulletin.
Asked about the death of Blanca, she said: “We in the family do not want to talk about it. For us, justice has been served. We do not want to recall what happened, because it brings back the pain.”
Blanca was found dead inside her car at the parking lot of a condominium unit in San Juan City on Nov. 7, 2001.
She was best remembered for her role in the longest-running and most-watched primetime sitcom John en Marsha, as she played the major character of Marsha Puruntong.
