ILOILO CITY — The Police Regional Office (PRO-6) has sternly warned people in Western Visayas region on the proliferation of fake money.
“We are reminding the public to carefully scrutinize all bills handed over to them,” urged Police Lieutenant Colonel Joem Malong, PRO-6 spokesperson.
Police arrested Edmond Dela Torre early this week in the Jaro district of this city for illegal possession and use of fake treasury or bank notes.
Based on reports from the Iloilo City Police Office (ICPO), Dela Torre used twice a counterfeit P500 bill at a sari-sari store to purchase cigarettes and bottles of rum. When the owner noticed the bills were dubious, the assistance of barangay (village) officials was sought and they placed Dela Torre under citizen’s arrest.
Authorities also found 54 pieces of alleged counterfeit P500 bills in Dela Torre’s possession.
“We encourage our people to report similar incidents to help us catch those who are circulating these counterfeits,” Malong added.
