Sorsogon sets world record for largest Filipino folk dance

SORSOGON CITY - At least 7,127 dancers, clad in blue, yellow, and red "Filipiniana" for women and white "Kamisa de Chino" for men, performed in a synchronized "Pantomina sa Tinampo" (love dance) that set a Guinness World record for largest Filipino folkloric dance on Thursday evening.

After the 30-minute synchronized dance held on a five-kilometer stretch of the main street of Sorsogon, Guinness World Record adjudicator Swapnil Dangarikar announced that the "Pantomina sa Tinampo" has broken record for the largest folk dance.
"We have a lot of guidelines, a lot of rules to be cleared in order to break a record, not just by number. I have seen all the evidence, I have surely checked how all the venues are performing and I am very happy to say that with 7,127 people, you have broken the record, this a new record to break," Dangarikar said.
Governor Francis "Chiz" Escudero and wife Heart Evangelista led in the record-breaking feat which was also participated in by different sectors and local government units (LGUs) of Sorsogon.
Prior to the announcement, the province of Sorsogon has been awarded by certificate of commendation from Philippine Folk Dance Society, Cultural Center of the Philippines and National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) for preserving and promoting the love dance.
"Pantomina sa Tinampo" is one of the highlights of the province's month-long celebration of "Kasanggayahan Festival" which is being held every month of October.
"Kasanggayahan" means a life of prosperity while "Pantomina" is a Bicolano traditional dance based on the movements of doves during mating season. Both partners imitate how doves do their courtship.
Escudero meanwhile lauded the participation of every Sorsoganons in attaining one goal through unity of the community.
"More than the record, bigger than the record is what we saw a couple of months ago, a few weeks ago, bawat opisina nagpa-practice. Umuulan, umaaraw nagpa practice. Lahat nagkakaisa sa isang hangarin at pangarap para sa ating lalawigan. Nasungkit man natin o hindi ang record, sa totoo lang, panalo na ang lalawigan sa ginawa at pakikilahok ng bawat isa sainyo. Tulad ng sinabi ni Vice Governor Wowo, kaya naman pala ng mga Sorsoganons na kumilos ng sabay sabay sa iisang direksyon. Hinihingi ko lang sa lahat, maliban sa pagsasayaw sa daan, gawin din natin ito sa lahat ng bagay para sa ikaka-unlad ng ating bayan," Escudero said.
