PH Gov't, German uni sign agreement for the creation of Phil Studies program

By Roy Mabasa Ruhr University Bochum (RUB), known as one of the largest and leading universities in Germany, has signed an agreement with the Philippine government for the creation of a Philippine studies program and the promotion of Philippine culture. Ruhr University Bochum (RUB) (RUB Photo) Ruhr University Bochum (RUB) (RUB Photo) According to the Philippine Consulate in Frankfurt, the agreement involves the donation of approximately EUR83,000 to support academic and research activities on Philippine matters, and the creation of a center that would serve as a hub for Philippine-related projects. Under the agreement, RUB is expected to conduct courses, seminars, lectures, conferences and other activities concerning the Philippines, coordinate academic research and teaching about the Philippines, and organize research visits for scholars in the Philippines and vice-versa. The premier German university will also enhance its acquisition of Philippine books, journals and other publications for the University's library. Deputy Speaker Loren Legarda, the principal sponsor of the project, witnessed the signing of the agreement between Consul General to Frankfurt Evelyn Austria Garcia and RUB Rector, Prof. Axel Scholmerich on October 15, 2019, in Bochum. The Consul General applauded Legarda’s significant support for the project and likewise expressed appreciation to RUB officials for their deep interest in the study of the Philippines. “We also appreciate the deep interest and commitment of officials and professors to advance Philippine studies at Ruhr University. It is my hope that this project will enhance greater understanding of the Philippines, strengthen cultural ties and people-to-people relations between our countries," she said. Rector Scholmerich, for his part, assured the Philippine officials that the university "will do its best in implementing the programs and projects under the agreement" even as he expressed hope that the project would be the start of a fruitful collaboration between the two sides. Shortly after the signing, Legarda delivered a lecture on Philippine weaving to students and professors of RUB, specifically promoting piña-seda weaving and the hundreds of stories of the Philippine weavers.
