An eight-man team from the Philippine Army's First Scout Ranger Regiment (FSRR) was awarded by Lieutenant General Noel Clement, Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Chief of Staff, with a meritorious achievement medal (MAM) on Monday after they brought home recognition in a recent international military exercise.

Clement personally pinned down the medals to First Lieutenant Michael Jungo, Sargeants Romero Sadava, Francis Rey Patches, Emmanuel Cabaron, and Corporals Rico Gundao, Alexander Parongpong Jr., Felipe Nebre, and Jojen Gastar after the flag-raising ceremony held at Camp Aguinaldo in Quezon City.
The Filipino Army rangers competed with 139 other patrol teams from different militaries around the world and bagged the silver medal at the Exercise Cambrian Patrol 2019 held in Wales, United Kingdom from October 14 to 16.
"Our Rangers have shown that the AFP is indeed a world-class armed force that every Filipino can be proud of," Clement said.
The Cambrian Patrol Exercise 2019 is an annual international military exercise hosted by the Headquarters 160th (Welsh) Brigade and regarded as the British Army's premier patrolling event.
It provides mission-focused and scenario-based exercise to enhance each participating unit's operational capabilities.
For 51 straight hours, the Army's eight-man team was given a set of orders on specific scenarios that include simulated battles and terrain navigation along the rugged Cambrian mountains of mid-Wales, with loads of logistics and minimal food and water.
Along the way, they were met with challenges including casualty evacuation, mock improvised explosive device (IED) disposal, intelligence gathering, water crossing, and close-target reconnaissance among others.
The teams were awarded points based on how they dealt with the challenges. The Filipino Scout Rangers placed only behind the Nepal team, which bagged the gold medal.
Last week, Lieutenant General Macairog Alberto, Army commanding general, also awarded the Army rangers with a commendation medal because of their feat.
