AUDIO JUNKIE: Nuggets of new songs

Here are new OPM songs to checkout especially this long weekend.

“Nothing Like” by Quest

QUEST

QUEST

Showing the world that you celebrate your woman is at the heart of Quest’s “Nothing Like.” It is a simple piano/keys and beats-driven song on which Quest employs some old-school R&B style. “Hug you from the back / Kiss you on the cheek” may sound like the cheesiest line, but his couplet “Let’s dance through the chaos/ Cheek bone-to-cheek bone/ To every season, love is the reason” makes up for it. Plus it’s a tuneful little bugger.

“Sana” by St. Wolf

ST. WOLF

ST. WOLF

St. Wolf is part of a new wave of alt-rock groups mentioned in the same breath as Autotelic, Unique and IV Of Spades. They’re in good company and for good reason: they sound tight and assured, especially in their newly released song “Sana.”

“Destination” by Leanne & Naara featuring Asch

Leann & Naara

Leann & Naara

Keyboard-guitar and voice duo Leanne & Naara is steadily expanding beyond the basics and perfecting their brand of lite-jazz imbued pop as heard on their latest song “Destination.” Singer Leanne’s sultry tones is all the more inviting when she sings “We can go to a place nice and quiet /Grab your coat I’ll meet you there in a minute” which promises of relaxing travel, dining and perhaps more. Later, her musical cohort Naara gets her turn to offer irresistible invite. But it’s the coolness of this tune’s vibe that reminds of EBTG, Workshy and the like that’s the bigger come on. A certain MC called Asch provides the rap juxtaposition on this pop jazzy number.

“Meant To Be” by Ethan Loukas featuring Leann & Naara

Ethan Loukas

Ethan Loukas

Rising singer-songwriter Ethan Loukas certainly has got something going on musically. With a strong and tuneful solo debut that feature his heartfelt singing wrapped in warm acoustic tone and R&B pop stylings, it seems like the ticket for this newcomer. So why not dish out more of that? Which is exactly what he did on new track “Meant To Be.”

“Mahal Mo Rin Kunwari” by Jireh Lim

Whatever happened to “Buko” singer Jireh Lim who, after his breakout success, seemed to have receded into the background? Wonder no more as one of the original “hugot” solo balladeers returns reinvigorated with “Mahal Mo Rin Kunwari.” Just in time too, lest the whole “hugot” train he helped nudge and gather momentum leave him behind totally. Here he is with a catchy poppy tune with a country-esque flavor and a comfortable seat in coach.
