While most people in the world talk about BTS these days, the original sing and dance boyband of the new millennia, Backstreet Boys, are touring the world again.
Nick Carter, Kevin Richardson, Howie Dorough, Brian Littrell and AJ McLean certainly had their share of stardom. In the mid-90’s up to the early aughts, you can’t turn your radio dial without catching snippets of “Get Down” or “Everybody” or “Show Me The Meaning Of Being Lonely” or any of their other big hits.
This year, that old BSB magic is rekindled, fanned to a flame by the fandoms. In Manila, there’s the Backstreet Boys Fan Club Philippines (BSBFCP). Formed in January 2006, Backstreet Boys themselves follow the club on both IG and Twitter.
With the Backstreet Boys’ “DNA Tour” happening tonight at Mall of Asia Arena, the members of BSBFCP have been brushing up on their BSB tracks again.
Fan Kathleen Villanueva recommends “Show ‘Em What You’re Made Of.” She named Howie D and Nick Carter as her favorites.
“I was a BSB fan from way before. This song inspires me to stand up and fight for what I know is right. As the song said ‘Don’t let them take you down,’” she said.
Relative BSBFCP newcomer Alonzo Suganob swears by the acoustic guitar-driven, Def Leppard-esque “Crawling Back To You” as a must-include in any BSB playlist. He shared that the mainstream hits was what initially “caught his attention, but the lesser known songs made me stay.”
Long-time fan Rose Anne Retiza picks “Drowning,” for sentimental reasons. “I remember the days of our childhood, dancing with my cousins while listening to BSB songs,” she said. Well, the piano-decked ballad certainly bears all the BSB hallmarks: unison singing, melodic hooks and, yes, Nick Carter.
Verna Roque recommended BSB song “As Long As You Love Me.”
“I first saw it in 1997 on Myx (local music channel). I have loved their songs since then and watching their videos has become stress-reliever for me.”
Sheen Madayag prides herself as BSB fan who’s been there since the boys suited up. And after 24 years of loving Backstreet Boys’ music, she believes the definite track is “Shape Of My Heart.”
“Every time I hear ‘Shape Of My Heart,’ emotions well up. It’s so sincere and it’s so BSB and I super love it!”
BSB’s 2013 album and title track “In A World Like This” is fan Jeanive Panimdim’s top pick. A fan since she was four years old, she loves that it “shows a different side of the boys.” She totally connects with the song’s “we can be someone’s rock” message.
Maria Constantino asked her sister to buy her a BSB album after seeing a music video of “Anywhere For You.” Brian Littrell-fan Ruby Otayde is old school in that she’s all for “Get Down.” Denden Cruz, who swears by AJ McLean, was “smitten by that Kevin monologue at the start of “I’ll Never Break Your Heart.”
Completing the playlist is “Safest Place To Hide” (Lorelie’s pick from the “Never Gone” CD), “I Still” (22-year fan Lenelle Cosico’s entry), and “Quit Playing Games With My Heart” (chosen by Irene Palisoc).
