Filipinos in Chile were advised on Wednesday to take “necessary precautions” following the declaration of State of Emergency in the South American country in response to unrest brought about by rising cost of living and inequality.
Department of Foreign Affairs (MANILA BULLETIN)
“Amidst the ongoing violent protests, Filipinos are advised to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel to affected areas, specifically in central Santiago and areas around submetro and bus stations,” the Department of Foreign Affairs said in a statement.
The State of Emergency is expected to last for 15 days.
The foreign affair’s statement was a reiteration of an advisory earlier issued by the Philippine Embassy in the capital of Santiago asking Filipinos to take necessary precautions in view of the declaration of a State of Emergency in Grand Santiago on October 19, 2019.
The declaration has since been extended to Chucabuco, Puente Alto, San Bernardo, Concepcion, Valparaiso, Iquique, Maipu, and other provinces.
Philippine Ambassador to Chile Ma. Teresita Daza said no Filipino has been reported affected by the ongoing unrest.
There are approximately 800 OFWs in Chile, majority of them are residing in the capital.
Through the Embassy, the DFA assured they will continue to monitor developments of the State of Emergency in Santiago, and provide advisory on the peace and security situation in Chile, when necessary.
Those who may need assistance may get in touch with the Embassy Hotline number +56-94-272-0320.
