BALIWAG, Bulacan - The quest for Sudoku supremacy continues as Bulakenyos who recently earned awards at Asia Sudoku Championship (ASC) held in Clark, Pampanga, and China Sudoku Championships held in Beijing competed anew in this year’s 14th Philippine Sudoku Super Challenge (PSSC) Regional Elimination held at SM City in this town.

Spearheaded by Mathematics Trainers’ Guild, Philippines (MTG) with SM Supermalls as one its partners, the competition aims to promote the number of puzzle among the youth to develop their reasoning ability and also to enhance the mental and critical skills of the students so they can solve life’s problems effectively and offer an alternative to spending enjoyable, educational, and productive past time.
Some of the 14th PSSC champions who are fresh from their International winning stints are 2019 Asia Sudoku Championship bronze medalist Empress Jayrielle Umipig of Sabang Elementary School, Baliuag and 2019 China Sudoku Championships 2nd Runner-Up Under 12 Louisa Jean Cabugao of Akle Elementary School, San Ildefonso both in this province.
Aside from Cabugao and Umipig, other champions of this year’s 14th Philippine Sudoku Super Challenge (PSSC) Regional Elimination at SM City Baliwag are Khian Cruz of Akle Elementary School- Under 8; Graciela Steff Gabriel of Sabang Elementary School- Under 12; and Mark Allen Mendoza- Over 15/Sudoku Grandmaster.
With a total of 278 participants from Bulacan, the competition was divided into five categories according to age group: Under 8 for 7 years old and below, Under 10 for 8-9 years, Under 12 for 10-11 years old, Under 15 for 12-15 years old and Sudoku Grandmaster for college level and professionals. In general, 35 schools attended the competition.
For more than a decade, the Philippine Sudoku Super Challenge has been going to SM Malls across the country to encourage more students who have the love and passion for Sudoku puzzles.(Freddie C. Velez)
