CEBU CITY -- At least 15 armed men ran off with jewelry worth at least P100 million in a daring robbery inside a mall in Mandaue City Saturday night.
It was around 7 p.m. when the robbers stormed two jewelry stores and two money-changing shops at the J-Center Mall.
A few hours later, police caught up with nine of the suspects as they waited to board a ferry for Masbate at Polambato Port in Bogo City, northern Cebu.
Four of them were killed after they tried to grab the firearms of the arresting team from the Regional Special Operation Task Group (RSOG) in Central Visayas, reported Col. Jonathan Abella, Mandaue police chief.
"After the robbery, we immediately alerted our counterparts in the whole province and that helped us intercept some of the suspects," Abella said.
Major Emily Santos, Bogo Police Station chief, identified the slain suspects as Kevin Andales, 25, from Tangub City, Misamis Occidental; Wilfredo Enguito, 47, Philip Taborada and Glen Tairos.
Their arrested companions are Roel Sumingit, 35, from Tangub; Jun Candelaria, 38, from Naga City, Bicol; Julivy Quirante, 43, from Tangub; Arnel Cimafranca, 38, and a still-unidentified man.
Police said the robbers entered the mall through separate entrances. They were armed with long and short firearms and used hammers to smash the display cases of the jewelry shops.
Abella said they are still investigating how the armed robbers were able to enter the mall without being detected.
Shots were fired as the robbers ransacked the shops, sending shoppers scampering.
A security guard of one of the jewelry shops was beaten up by the armed group.
Police said the robbers fled on motorcycles and a Toyota Innova with license plate ZEM 489.
At past 11 p.m., the Innova was spotted arriving at a wharf in Barangay Polambato, Bogo.
Police sought assistance from the Coast Guard in intercepting the men in the Innova.
Seized from the suspects were a. 38 revolver, cellular phones, and cash.
Police said the suspects being brought to the police station when they tried to wrestle the firearms of the policemen. During the scramble, shots were allegedly exchanged, leading to the death of four of the suspects.
Police said it was possible that the stolen jewelry was with the other robbers, who remain at large.
