Kontra Daya: Appointment of Cardema to another government post will not be a surprise

"Cardema could be next since, just like Uson, he has endeared himself to Duterte as a blind supporter," he said. Last week, Cardema withdrew his motion for reconsideration regarding his disqualification by the Commission on Elections (Comelec) First Division currently pending before the en banc. The former National Youth Commission chair was earlier declared ineligible by the Comelec First Division for being overaged. Before withdrawing his motion, Cardema also filed a Notice of Withdrawal regarding his nomination as first nominee of the partylist group. Kontra Daya, meantime, believes it is high time for the Senate and the House of Representatives to expand the one-year ban on government appointments to losing party-list nominees, particularly the first, second and third nominees. "This is one way for legislators to prove that they are not spineless puppets of Malacañang Palace," said the group in a statement. While it may be argued that the party-list system provides for election of party-list groups (not individuals), Kontra Daya said it is better for those in power to exercise prudence in giving out appointments to its favored individuals clearly rejected by the voters. "In the same way that the rich and powerful are bastardizing the party-list system, the clique holding office in Malacañang Palace cannot use legal technicalities to hide the ugly head of patronage politics," the statement read. "The people should voice their dissent in recycling the likes of Uson, who has hardly made a difference in her work with the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) and the Presidential Communications Operations Office (PCOO)," the group added. In the May 2019 elections, Uson was the first nominee of AA KASOSYO party-list, which failed to get a seat in the House of Representatives.
