Mayor Isko to receive Gusi Peace Prize

By Erma Edera  Manila Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso is one of 17 laureates who will receive the prestigious 2019 Gusi Peace Prize at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) next month. Manila Mayor-elect Francisco Manila Mayor-elect Francisco "Isko" Moreno Domagoso (ALI VICOY / MANILA BULLETIN FILE PHOTO) In a letter addressed to the mayor, the Gusi Peace Prize Philippine and International Committee said they have decided to bestow on him the award for his “untiring effort, working for people’s amelioration, to find peaceful solutions for people’s welfare by promoting peace through Statesmanship.” The group also said Domagoso “greatly contributed to the lives of people through consistently creating positive changes” since his election.  “Your involvement in reducing crime and environmental degradation has shown rapid improvement in a short span of time,” part of the letter read. The group said Moreno’s “endeavors had provided great opportunities that ameliorated the political standards and quality of life, therefore achieving peace and prosperity.” The Gusi Peace Prize is a private award given by the Gusi Peace Prize Foundation based in Manila.  The Gusi Peace Prize is given to recognize individuals and organizations who contribute to global peace and progress through a wide variety of fields. It was founded by Barry Gusi as a way to continue the work of his late father, Gemeniano Javier Gusi, a World War II guerrilla who fought against the Japanese and later became a politician and human rights advocate. Supreme Court Chief Justice Lucas Bersamin was among the awardees of the Gusi Peace Prize International Awards last year.
