National research council embarks on basic research caravan all over PH

The National Research Council of the Philippines (NRCP) has commenced its very first Nationwide Regional Basic Research Caravan, making stops in different regions in the country.

The Caravan is NRCP’s latest initiative to put basic research on spotlight by bringing the results of NRCP-funded researches to the regions and tie them up to their regional research agenda for increased utility and relevance of knowledge generation and innovation.
They made their initial launch in Region 2 last August, followed by the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) and the Ilocos Region. The caravan will now head to Region 12 on September 19 to 20.
The initiative was brought by the universal perception that fundamental discoveries are not always contributing to immediate salient results, causing their contributions to the most important technological advances go unrecognized and unevenly promoted.
The NRCP Regional Basic Research Caravan aims to share basic research with a wider audience so it will be more visible and get extramural interest and support from different stakeholders in the regions.
The NRCP, aside from being Department of Science Technology’s (DOST) collegial body of researchers, engineers and scientists, is also the agency tasked to support and promote basic researches. NRCP transmits the results of these researches to the important legislative bodies as basis for policy research.
For its first stop, NRCP brought the Caravan in Basco, Batanes with DOST Region 2 and Batanes State University as its partners. Bannered with the theme “Nurturing Regional R&D Niches” NRCP intends to bring together the key players of R&D in the region such as the key officials of DOST Region II, other relevant government agencies, the higher education institutes, and the LGU.
The Caravan aims to disseminate R & D efforts of NRCP, facilitate exchange of scientific ideas among new researchers and research institutions and provide guidance in writing research proposals that are aligned to the existing National Integrated Basic Research Agenda (NIBRA) of NRCP.
One of the highlights of the Caravan will be the sharing of NRCP research findings which are deemed relevant to the needs of the region. Dr. Bonifacio F. Cayabyab, NRCP member and scientist at UPLB National Crop Protection Center, will present the results of his research Molecular Diagnostics and Taxonomy of Cassava Pests and their Natural Enemies.
Other important parts of the activities include workshop on enhancing governance through science and arts and proposal writing, sharing of practical guide to access Grants In-Aid (GIA) funds, and orientation on online membership application for incoming NRCP members.
