Don't do crime if you can't do time - Cayetano

By Ben Rosario ”If you can’t do the time, don’t do the crime!” This was the advice of Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano to would-be criminals as he strongly backed the continued exclusion of persons who committed heinous crimes from getting the benefits shortened prison sentence for good conduct. (There is an ongoing hearing but I think there is a national consensus that heinous crimes should not be included). Cayetano also lauded President Rodrigo Duterte’s decision to sack Bureau of Corrections Director General Nicanor Faeldon noting that the chief executive is an unwavering enemy of graft and corruption in government. “I sincerely believe that the President is 100 percent against corruption, may zero tolerance. Unfortunately, some people allow to do it, or some people allow those under them to do it,” the House official stated. Faeldon has been fired by Duterte as Bucor chief in the wake of reports that he was instrumental in the application of early release from prison by hundreds of convicts of heinous crimes. Public outcry over the attempted release of former Calauan Mayor Antonio Sanchez who was sentenced to seven life prison terms for the 1993 deaths of University of the Philippines-Los Banos students EileenSarmenta and Allan Gomes. Cayetano lamented that despite efforts of the Duterte administration to cleanse the bureaucracy there remains a chance that anomalies are committed. Nina Taduran (ACT-CIS Partylist) and Romeo Momo Sr. (CWS Partylist) said all parole and GCTA laws should must contain a provision that will make it mandatory for the Bucor to inform the relatives of the victim the impending release of a convict. Taduran also called for the inclusion of religious, community and other civilians in the decision to grant the early release of a reformed convict.
