The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) vowed to help in the inspection of vape shops within the 100-perimeter of public and private schools in Metro Manila as it backed the ban of the Department of Health (DOH) on the use of electronic cigarettes and vapes.

On June 14, Health Secretary Francisco Duque III signed Administrative Order (AO) 2019-0007 which regulates the manufacturing, distribution, and sale of e-cigarettes and vapes.
It also is stated in the AO that e-cigarettes, including both Electronic Nicotine and Non-nicotine Delivery Systems (ENDS/ENNDS), are used to deliver aerosolized solutions to the lungs, which is similar to the act of smoking.
The inspection conducted by MMDA Environmental Enforcers within 100-meter perimeter of schools in Metro Manila showed that a total of 681 vape stores were found located near schools in 2018.
MMDA Chairman Danilo Lim said that such products pose harmful effects to human health.
“I hope that the order will be strictly enforced to support our smoke-free environment campaign,” he said in a statement.
Partial data based on 2017 reports submitted by some Business Permit and Licensing Offices of local government units (LGU) revealed that there are only 73 vape stores registered in Metro Manila.
“The agency is willing to provide technical assistance for LGUs in crafting their respective ordinance on e-cigarettes,” the MMDA chairman said
MMDA said LGUs that have the existing ordinance on e-cigarettes are Caloocan, Muntinlupa, Quezon City, Taguig, and Navotas.
