BUTUAN CITY – The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), in partnership with the Office of Civil Defense (OCD), is building a two-story Government Command and Control Center (GCCC) for the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) in this city.

The state-of-the-art building will beef up the government’s disaster risk reduction efforts in Mindanao.
DPWH allocated P77 million for the building located near Bancasi National Airport and very close to the disaster-resilient warehouse and the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) satellite office to ensure close coordination with vital agencies during calamities.
The DPWH regional office also plans to form an Earthquake Resiliency Team (ERT) in this city.
The ERT is composed of officials and technical specialists from the regional office and the District Engineering Offices (DEOs) in Northeastern Mindanao or Caraga region.
“Our main objective in the creation of ERT is to protect the people in time of an earthquake,” DPWH Regional Director Pol M. Delos Santos told Manila Bulletin on Friday.
The creation of ERT ensures the earthquake resilience of the region’s infrastructure, particularly those in Surigao del Sur, Surigao del Norte and Dinagat Islands, which often experience mild earthquakes.
“We make sure that our infrastructures cannot just withstand earthquake but also protect the people in the event of an earthquake,” Delos Santos said.
DPWH Secretary Mark Villar created an Earthquake Resiliency Program Management Office (ER-PMO) through a department order issued last July 10.
