DUMAGUETE CITY – Manila Bulletin columnist Dr. Florangel Rosario Braid was honored by the Silliman University’s College of Mass Communication (CMC) in its “Salute to SU’s Pioneer Journalism Professor” during the SU Founder’s Day, Monday, August 25.

Braid, a pioneer of SU-BMC, cited the role of Dr. Crispin Maslog, BMC’s longest-serving director, in putting Silliman BMC in the mass communication map in the country.
Braid highlighted the growth of the school as she recalled how she and Maslog envisioned the school as a modest school of mass communications, a school that trains community and provincial journalists.
Braid noted that people could be wondering whether communication was still relevant in today’s digital world. “It is still important to learn the science of masscom specifically in the age of fake news. Our role is important to be the beacon in the stage of new media and fake news, and in the times of enormous conflict,” she said.
These are challenges on how we can use technology and establish peace, she added.
Braid was given the recognition for her early contribution to SU-School of Mass Communication as a pioneering member of the then SU-School of Journalism and Communication from 1966-67, being its assistant director in the Office of Information and Communication.
Braid was recognized for her excellence and leadership in communication research, education, policy development, peace and advocacy and international cooperation.
