ILOILO CITY – The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR-6) has warned residents in the island province of Guimaras of the hazards posed by sinkholes.
(MANILA BULLETIN)
This, after a geologist of DENR’s Environmental Management Bureau (EMB-6) found a sinkhole in Sta. Teresa village of Jordan, the capital town of Guimaras.
“It signifies the dissolution of limestone or any calcareous rocks is occurring in the area,” said EMB-6 Senior Geologist Catherine Tapalla.
The sinkhole emerged after a hand-held water pump collapsed five years ago.
Tapalla particularly noted that the sinkhole was 85 meters away from susceptible segment to land subsidence, which is gradual or sudden sinking of land surface.
EMB-6 has made recommendations to fill the sinkhole anew to stop it from expanding, while nearby residents must evacuate during prolonged rain, or after should an earthquake occur.
Meanwhile, EMB-6 is closely working with the Guimaras provincial government in identifying other areas with sinkholes.
