ILOILO CITY — A P32-million evacuation center formally opened in Zarraga town, Iloilo province.

(OCD-6 photo / MANILA BULLETIN) Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana, Iloilo Governor Arthur Defensor Jr. and Office of Civil Defense (OCD-6) Regional Director Jose Roberto Nuñez turned over the two-story evacuation center to the local government of Zarraga led by Mayor John Tarrosa. Lorenzana explained that more evacuation centers are being established because of the frequency of natural disasters worsened by climate change and global warming. He noted how the Department of Education (DepEd) expressed concern over the use of schools as evacuation centers during disasters. The evacuation center has rooms, bathrooms, toilets, kitchen, dining area, and storage rooms. It is built by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH-6), Nuñez said Zarraga is the sixth evacuation center to open in Western Visayas region and second in Iloilo province, the first one was built in Carles town. There are also evacuation centers in Kalibo town, Aklan province; San Jose town, Antique province; and two in Negros Occidental provinces. Evacuation centers are also under construction in Roxas City, Capiz province, San Miguel town Iloilo province; Sagay City, Negros Occidental province; Bacolod City, Negros Occidental province; and Nueva Valencia, Guimaras province.
